I began drawing and painting at a young age, inspired by the classic Walter T. Foster art books. In high school, I was fortunate to learn from passionate and dedicated art teachers, which helped me earn a scholarship to the Ontario College of Art and Design. There, I focused on life drawing and filmmaking—disciplines that shaped my approach to composition and visual storytelling.

I continued my education at York University, home to Canada’s largest and most innovative art program.. The faculty were deeply influential, and I was particularly drawn to both the painting and photography departments. I was also part of the second graduating class of York’s newly created, four-year Faculty of Education program—an exciting and formative experience.

Artist Statement

Artistic Practice

My painting style emphasizes vibrant colour and the subtle interplay of light on organic forms. I often use a 10-foot lightbox to illuminate still life subjects, bringing out luminous details and textures. In contrast, my landscapes are serene and contemplative, capturing depth, clarity, and a quiet sense of place.

Technique and materials are central to my process. I’m fascinated by how traditional methods can bring a subject to life. My travels—especially to Croatia—have had a profound impact on my work. The Adriatic’s captivating blues, the luminous Mediterranean light, and the timeless presence of Roman architecture offer endless inspiration. Closer to home, I find equal beauty in the landscapes of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Influences

My work is shaped by the romanticism and naturalism of the Hudson River School, and by the expressive realism of John Singer Sargent and Joaquín Sorolla. Among Canadian artists, I’ve been especially inspired by Philip Craig, a modern Impressionist represented by the Loch Gallery. I’ve also drawn great creative energy from my students over the years, and from my early mentors in pottery and photography.
